HOPE FOR NEW YORK
Avail
The West Side · The East Side

Avail (formerly Midtown Pregnancy Support Center) is a confidential care network for those confirming and making decisions about unplanned pregnancies and those seeking support after an abortion.

Mission: To empower New Yorkers facing an unintended pregnancy or past abortion with critical support and resources to inform their decisions, build healthy relationships and promote healing.

Vision: A city where life is valued and lives are transformed.

OUR PARTNERSHIP
Our volunteers provide practical, emotional, and social support for women facing an unplanned pregnancy, and preparing for childbirth.
Our grant funds support Avail's decision making and pregnancy support programs, which Avail provides free of charge to all of their clients.
Over the years, volunteers have supported one another through snack bags for those serving during the work week, created gift baskets for clients, and started the baby shower committee to celebrate new parents.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

All volunteers are asked to complete an application and be interviewed to assess the best volunteer role before serving. Dates and times of upcoming opportunities below are only to record when you request an application, and are not volunteering opportunities.

Client Advocates: Volunteers must feel comfortable meeting with clients in high stress situations and be great listeners. This role entails assistance with basic administrative tasks when not meeting with clients. General volunteer training, basic administrative training, as well as separate client advocacy training(s) provided. Two and a half hours a week for nine months minimum commitment required.

  • Female Pregnancy Support Client Advocates: Volunteers provide one-on-one support to clients who are carrying to term.
  • Male Client Advocates: Volunteers meet individually with the father of the baby for various types of appointments including: decision making, parenting support, and postabortion emotional support. May also be needed to sit in with couples and a female client advocate for appointments.
  • Postabortion Emotional Support Client Advocates: Postabortion emotional support client advocates (female only) serve clients who have had an abortion. There are two roles of the postabortion client advocate: meeting with clients one-on-one and/or coleading a nine-week postabortion support group (curriculum provided by Avail).

Administrative Volunteers: Two hour initial training provided on these roles and three-month minimum commitment required. Volunteers may select a preference, but are expected to fill in with other administrative roles and tasks as needed.

Baby Shower Group Volunteers: Volunteers from pre-existing groups (i.e. church community groups, women's group, etc.) needed to organize and help out with baby showers for clients.

Pregnancy Support Classes: Registered nurses needed to lead classes for moms-to-be on any of the following topics: breastfeeding, labor & delivery, infant care, and pregnancy health.

All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

“I’ve also been so blessed by the way my fellow volunteers have also become my dear friends and that the center really does represent a safe place to be who you are, whether you are the client or the volunteer.”
