Inwood House

Established in 1830, Inwood House is a leading organization in helping teens become healthy, self-reliant adults by providing them teen pregnancy prevention education, teen family support services and the tools to make a fresh start. Their impressive range of programs serve 4,000 youth and young families from 22 sites in New York City and New Jersey and seek to improve the life-long outcomes for pregnant and parenting teens and their children.

HFNY volunteers serve at their UES maternity residence for pregnant and parenting teens who are homeless, in foster care, or aged out of foster care. The residents come from neighborhoods which have the highest incidences of teenage pregnancy and AIDS, drug abuse, school dropout and gang activity. At Inwood House, the teens are given a safe home, counseling, prenatal care at New York Presbyterian Hospital and NYC Board of Education-sponsored schooling. Classes in parenting and independent living skills, maternal health, job readiness, stress-reduction, health, nutrition and fitness help prepare them to be nurturing parents and self-sufficient adults, ready to reconnect with their communities.
