Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Do I need to know how to knit to participate in Knit Together?

Yes.  You do not need to be an expert, but you do need to know the basics (casting on, knit, purl, casting off).We are unable to teach knitting at our monthly knitting circles. If you would like to learn how to knit, visit the Citilights knitting circle at Redeemer.  For more information, visit www.redeemer.com.

2.  Do I need to use my own supplies?

Hope for New York supplies our yarn, but you do need to use your own knitting needles or crochet hooks.  You can pick up yarn at any of our monthly knitting circles or at the Hope for New York office (1359 Broadway, 4th Floor) during normal business hours 9:30am-6:00pm.

3. Are there guidelines for submissions?

Hats and scarves should be adult size.  Scarves are usually at least five inches wide and forty-five inches long.  Hats should be eight to ten inches high and twenty-two to twenty-four inches around.  These are guidelines only.  As long as the items are warm and adult size, they will be fine.  Patterns for hats, scarves, and prayer shawls are available at the Hope for New York office, but feel free to use your own patterns.

4. When are submissions due?

Hats and scarves are due at the end of November. We package the items into hat/scarf sets in December. The sets are distributed to homeless shelters and nursing homes as Christmas gifts.  Prayer shawls can be donated at anytime.  They are donated to Rivington House, an AIDS hospice, through Gifted Hands.

5. Can I still participate in Knit Together if I can’t make it to the monthly knitting circles?

Yes! You can drop off completed items at the Hope for New York office during normal business hours 10AM-5PM.
