Awesome Volunteer Alex Spears Builds Relationships, Trust with International Teens

October 03, 2012
Our Young Life is specifically geared towards international students. On average, we have about 10-15 kids, but it feels like sometimes you get about five new kids a week. Sometimes only six kids will show up and others about 25. One of the really good things about Young Life is that it tends to be a big part of sowing seeds, and that so happens to be the frustrating part too. You want to see results, but at the same time, a lot of it really is just building relationships, making kids feel safe, letting kids know that if they can’t trust anyone else in their life, they can trust you and just making sure their basic needs are met. That’s the point where you can start to share the Gospel.

Awesome Volunteer Leslie Larson Mentors & Empowers Pre-teen Girls

August 24, 2012
Leslie is a mentor with Kids With A Promise (KWAP), a ministry that seeks to serve NYC’s most-at-risk children and youth by loving them unconditionally, and providing a caring, nurturing environment where they can learn and grow. Tell us about KWAP: They are very up front and clear that it is intentional about the kids’ spiritual development. There are a lot of programs that help with homework, college and career advice. But at KWAP we always begin with a devotional prayer to show them what it means to have a personal relationship with Christ.

Awesome Volunteer Lucy Bradshaw Goes Across Cultures to Serve

July 12, 2012
Lucy teaches English and basic computer skills to Arab-American immigrants. How did you get connected with the BAAFC? Before I moved New York City, I’d been involved with international people for about 5 years. That’s my passion, my calling. Yet, I had a hard time finding a place in the city to volunteer with. I spoke to an HFNY staff member, and told her about my heart to help underserved internationals, and that’s how I found out about the BAAFC.
