Advent Hope in a Season of Waiting

Advent 2024

"I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning.” — Psalm 130:5-6

"Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” — Luke 1:45

Advent is a season marked by waiting, longing, and anticipation. For many of us, this season may mirror places of longing in our own lives. We’re waiting for answers, for healing, for hope to break through in the midst of darkness. In these moments, it’s easy to become inward-focused, hoping only for our own needs to be met and our own waiting to be fulfilled.

Yet, Advent reminds us that in the very places where we’re tempted to hold back, God invites us to give generously.

Think of Mary. A young woman, newly engaged, facing unexpected news of a miraculous pregnancy. She, too, had her own season of waiting and perhaps even her own questions and fears. Yet, instead of keeping to herself, Mary chose to visit her cousin Elizabeth. In her act of generosity, she shared her hope and her wonder with someone else. Mary’s gift was simple, but profound—it was herself.

In our own waiting, we’re invited to this same kind of generosity. We may not have all the answers or see the fulfillment of our hopes yet, but we can still give. When we give from a place of waiting, our generosity becomes a radical act of trust—a declaration that God is with us, even here, and that He will fulfill His promises.

Prayer for Advent

Lord, open our hearts even while we wait. Let our longing become an invitation to give generously, trusting that You will provide for us as we bless others. Transform our season of waiting into a time of joyful expectancy, as we hold onto Your promises and share Your love with those around us. Amen.
