Getting to Know Our Neighbors at Graffiti

Courtney, one of Graffiti's dedicated Wednesday Night Meal volunteers, is an incredible service to their team. She volunteers each week, offering our clients social connection, compassion, and a listening ear.

Graffiti

By Courtney Runn

I often think of the book of Jeremiah, where the Israelites were sent away from their home in exile. In this passage, God is giving the Israelites instructions on how to live well in exile.

He tells them to be rooted in the city where He has placed them, to seek the welfare of the city, and seek the wholeness of the people there. I think we’re called to seek flourishing where we’re placed and seek the welfare of our neighbors. And we can’t do this unless we know them, their pain, their desires, their stories.

For two and a half years, I’ve volunteered every week at Graffiti’s Wednesday Night Meals. Now, when I’m taking the bus or walking down the street in the neighborhood, I know my neighbors.

Graffiti guests will wave to me and say Hi, and I know their names and their stories. I experience the abundant life in Christ by volunteering at Graffiti. It’s become such a special community.
