Three Affiliates Bridging the Gaps in the NYC Education System

Network Talks: Education

With over 1 million children in 1,800 schools across our city, our fall season kicked off with another Network Talks! Our topic focused on Bridging the Gap: Disparities in the NYC Education System

Aswan Morris, Regional Director of Young Life (Bronx and Manhattan), got us started by sharing four categorical reasons that our educational system is uneven.

He then moderated a conversation between two affiliates who support children in education: David Beidel, President and Founder of Urban Hope, which helps improve the literacy of school children in West Brighton, one of the poorest and crime-ridden neighborhoods of Staten Island. Jeremy Del Rio, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Thrive Collective, works with public schools across our city to provide arts education, encouraging the creation of over 450 murals to foster creativity and mentoring.

Collectively, all three men have nearly 10 decades of experience and expertise navigating challenges with schooling and learning. They're passionate about breaking generational poverty cycles through higher education and literacy, which empowers children to aspire to and reach their God-given potential.
