Mont Lawn City Camp (MLCC) is a faith-based mentoring and enrichment program for children in the South Bronx. City Camp, a program of The Bowery Mission, helps children build resilience and thrive, equipping them to grow into adults who are spiritually grounded, economically self-sufficient, have healthy relationships and positively contribute to their communities.

Apply to become an in-person tutor for students at our Mont Lawn City Camp, starting in September. Volunteers will support with homework help and tutoring.Our students are mostly elementary school aged between 6-14 who need help in mostly Math and Reading. An interview and background check will be required.

You'll be a great fit for this role if you:

• Have lots of energy and an upbeat personality.
• Are an active and patient listener who can give support and encouragement.
• Desire to model healthy, trusting relationships.
• Have experience giving clear communication and setting appropriate boundaries.
• You are at least 16 years old.
• If you speak Spanish, that is a plus (but it is not required) as this is many of our children and families first language.

Commitment:

• 2.5-5 hours a week on Mondays and/or Wednesdays, for an entire school year or 6-month commitment. Volunteers serve on Mondays and Wednesdays only.
  • Homework Help runs from 3:30-4:30pm.
  • Tutoring runs from 4:45-6pm.

Volunteers will support during Homework Help:

• Assisting children with homework assignments in ELA and Math, helping younger children with reading, and independent academic-based activities.

• You will then be contacted to schedule a video interview with our program director.
• Complete a background check.
• You will be notified if you have been accepted as a tutor.

NOTE: All potential tutors will be required to complete a background check. Each tutor will be given information specific to their student. Our staff will provide oversight for the first lesson in order to get the student and tutor acquainted.
