About this Opportunity

Mission: To provide a supportive residence for expectant women while they build self-–sustainable lives founded on faith in Jesus Christ. We provide:

  • Housing for unsupported expectant mothers for up to 2 years after their child is born
  • Life skills curriculum preparing residents for independent living;
  • Goal planning towards a self-sustainable life;
  • Biblical teaching and guidance;
  • Individualized academic tutoring to advance the education of each resident;
  • Free, onsite parenting assistance while mothers are in class or at work;
  • Job placement program to prepare residents and assist them to find employment;
  • Continual physical, emotional, and spiritual support from staff members and mentors

Due to the nature of this position, Board Members need to have their own personal Christian faith

Commitment:

  • The Board meets 4 times a year on a Saturday from 9am to 1pm. 
  • In addition, Board members volunteer to lead and/or attend monthly prayer call for 1 hour on the first of every month, whenever possible.
  • Board members are also expected to attend yearly fundraising events

Position Description

The Board will support the work of Expect Hope and provide Christ-centered, mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by Expect Hope’s Executive Directors, the Board-Director relationship is a partnership, and appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.

Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

Leadership, governance and oversight

  • Serving as a trusted advisor to the Executive Directors as they develop and implement develops Expect Hope’s strategic plan 
  • Reviewing, modifying as necessary, and approving the program plan, including the staff and resident manuals
  • Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by Expect Hope for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics; reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings 
  • Approving Expect Hope’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting, all legal and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the Executive Director
  • Assisting the Director and Board Chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members 
  • Partnering with the Director and board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out 
  • Serving on at least one committee or task force and executing special assignments 
  • Representing Expect Hope to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization through intentional networking
  • Ensuring Expect Hope’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities Expect Hope serves

Financial contribution

  • Expect Hope Board Members will consider Expect Hope a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority.
  • So that Expect Hope can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, Expect Hope expects to have all Board Members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity.

Qualifications

Each Board member is expected to:

  • Sign consent to the statements of faith and ethics and the confidentiality statement
  • Be a member of a church that aligns doctrinally with the statement of faith and ethics.
  • Have professional experience with leadership accomplishments.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and understanding of the families Expect Hope serves, as well as a passion for improving their lives
  • Possess the desire and ability to work well as part of a team with the goal of expanding the Kingdom of God
  • Be servants and disciples of Christ, exemplifying the fruit of the Spirit

Board members commit to a three-year term; at the end of this term, a member must be reelected by peers on the Board if desiring to serve another term.
