Prayers for Our Neighbors Who Are Hungry

if you pour yourself out for the hungry
and satisfy the desire of the afflicted,
then shall your light rise in the darkness
and your gloom be as the noonday.

Isaiah 58:10

We seek to be a people who serve our poor and marginalized neighbors in both word and deed. We put feet to our faith as we tangibly serve our neighbors, and we also go to the Father on their behalf, presenting their needs to Him in prayer, seeking their welfare.

Please join us by committing to spend time praying earnestly for our neighbors in need. Below is a short guide to get you started as you pray this season specifically for our neighbors who are hungry.

PRAY. . .

  • for the 1.4 million New Yorkers who suffer from food insecurity and/or hunger, unsure of where their next meal will come from. Father, we ask that you would provide tangibly and materially for our neighbors who don’t have enough food to eat. We boldly ask that You make a way for each person in this city to be well fed, Lord, and that we, as Your body, would be first in line to help meet those physical needs.

  • for jobs to employ single parents who are unable to provide food for their families. Pray that they would receive the support they need to provide for their children. Lord, we know that You are the Great Provider, that every good gift comes from You. We pray You would bless our hungry neighbors with jobs that they might be able to provide for their families, for their children.

  • that shelters and soup kitchens throughout the city, specifically The Bowery Mission, New York City Relief, and The Salvation Army, would be resourced to provide food for men, women, and children experiencing hunger. Pray that churches would come alongside these organizations to provide financial and volunteer resources, just as Jesus cares not only for the spiritual needs of his children but also the physical. Thank you, God, for those in this city who’ve responded to Your call to serve our neighbors in very real ways. We pray that organizations seeking to alleviate hunger would be well staffed and resourced and encouraged as they carry on the work of Your Kingdom in NYC and that we would be a people who give sacrificially and generously to this Kingdom work.
