Watch: "Just Mercy" Event (Plus Resources to Take Action)
Redeemer Downtown and Hope for New York recently co-hosted the event, Connecting Just Mercy with Justice in New York City.
In June, Redeemer Downtown asked congregants to watch the movie, Just Mercy, which is based on Bryan Stevenson's memoir, and then join a group discussion. To encourage their community to take further action toward biblical justice, Downtown and HFNY then invited three HFNY affiliates to talk more about criminal and racial injustice issues in NYC.
Community Connections for Youth, Prison Fellowship, and Youth For Christ were part of an online panel to share about their organizations and their experiences. Watch the virtual event below, and then find the resources to serve these organizations:
Community Connections for Youth
- Be a Career Mentor for youth in the South Bronx who are interested in your field of work
- Read "The Cost of Youth Incarceration" to educate yourself (Ruben shared this during the event)
- Find more resources here
Prison Fellowship
- Be an Reentry Life Coach or Instructor of a 12-week course to residents at Riker's Island
- Get your church involved in an Outrageous Justice discussion or a Second Chance Month
- Donate Bibles to prisoners (as Natika mentioned, demand for Bibles increased during the crisis)
- Find more resources here
Youth for Christ
- Attend a virtual "See the Story" session on August 20 to learn how mentors make a difference (Dan's dream is 1,000 mentors in NYC!)
- Find more resources here
We hope this event will encourage you to remain consistent in pursuing biblical justice in our city, especially as it relates to criminal justice!
