Before I joined the staff at Hope for New York, I was a volunteer. I signed up to serve breakfast on Mondays at St. Paul’s House, a food pantry and soup kitchen in Hell’s Kitchen.
Understanding the comprehensiveness of God’s reign must lead us to a comprehensive understanding of discipleship, where spiritual formation is not limited to our prayers or Bible studies, but extends to serving the needs of others as we seek to actively engage in God’s redemptive plan.
The story of Jacob Riis became very dear to me, not only because I, too, moved to New York from Denmark, but also because I realized how selfish, self-centered, and career-focused a life I was leading.
